Myth #1. Brushing Harder Cleans Better. Especially if you’re a hard-time gamer, this may seem counterintuitive. After all, if button-mashing works in video games, shouldn’t it work in real life? Unfortunately, not so! Brushing hard can damage the enamel, cause gum recession and expose the softer tooth roots, and will weaken your teeth over time. After all, you’re cleaning your teeth, not scraping off some paint! Instead, brush gently with a soft-bristled brush (or even softer!) in a circular motion for two minutes twice a day. And as gamers know, accuracy and strategy win the day.

Myth #2. Sugar Causes Cavities. Well, yes, and no. While it’s easy to scare your children with stories of the horrid “sugar monsters,” it’s a bit more complex than that. Rather than sugar acting as the sole catalyst that damages your teeth, it’s the bacteria that eat the sugar. This bacteria produces acid that leads to tooth decay. This also means that simple starches like chips and crackers are also big contributors, as bacteria like them just as much as we do.

Myth #3. Braces are Only for Children. False! While braces are certainly more familiar to children, it’s not a limited experience. Braces among adults have become more common over the years- and if putting wires in your mouth doesn’t fit your fancy, you often can try Invisalign instead. 

Myth #4. White Teeth are Healthy Teeth. Life would be easy if this were the case. While healthy teeth are usually whiter than not, it’s not a requirement. Keeping your teeth white is like posting the perfect Instagram pictures while your life spirals downhill- appearances can be deceiving! Don’t become lax once you have white teeth; they (along with your gums!) need care and love. 

Myth #5. Chewing Gum is Like Brushing. While some chewing gum can promote cleaner teeth and breath, it’s certainly not a replacement! Chewing gum can’t reach everywhere your brush can. And it doesn’t replace flossing, either. Oh, and please read on.

Myth #6. Flossing Doesn’t Matter. Flossing is an excellent way to remove plaque, disrupt bacterial biofilms, clean your breath, prevent cavities, and keep your oral health in tip-top shape. While remembering to floss might feel impossible sometimes, don’t give up; it’s better to floss sometimes rather than never.

Myth #7. Only Visit the Dentist to Address Pain. Super false! Why not prevent those problems in the first place? Not all infections and decay are super obvious, especially at first. With regular checkups, we can use oral exams and X-rays to spot problems while they’re still small and manageable. Beat the curve, and always be on the lookout. And remember, your oral health is a part of your overall health.

Myth #8. Don’t Brush Baby Teeth. This misconception comes from a thoughtful place; that baby teeth are precious and need gentle care. While true, it’s also why brushing is so important. Not only does brushing expose them to healthy, life-long habits, but it will also keep their teeth fresh, no matter what strange things they stick inside their mouths! 

Myth #9 Some Dentists Offer “One-Day Dental Implants,” and Others Don’t.

People choosing dental implants require having some or all of their teeth removed before the dentist or oral surgeon places the implant “roots” into the jaw bone. Although the patient comes home with either temporary or permanent new crowns (or dentures) placed upon the implants, it still takes an average of four to eight months for the implant to fuse into the bone to support full chewing. So “yes” to a beautiful smile in one day but “no” to the myth that you’re “one and done” in a day.
